TEF Exam Tips

In the TEF (Test d'Évaluation de Français) exam, the task of responding to a newspaper article typically falls under the section called "Expression écrite" (Written Expression). Here's a general guideline on how to approach this task:

Understand the Article: Carefully read the newspaper article provided in the exam. Pay attention to the main topic, key points, arguments, and any opinions expressed by the author.

Analyse the Article: Take a moment to analyse the structure and tone of the article. Identify the author's perspective and any biases that may be present. Consider the target audience of the article as well.

Brainstorm Ideas: Before you start writing your response, brainstorm ideas on how you want to react to the article. Think about whether you agree or disagree with the author's viewpoint and why. Consider any additional information or perspectives you might want to bring into your response.

Organize Your Response: Structure your response in a clear and logical manner. Typically, you'll want to include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph should focus on a specific point or argument related to the article. D’abord, Ensuite, En addition, En conclusion are some examples to start your points.

Use Proper Language: Use formal language appropriate for a written exam. Avoid slang, colloquialisms, and overly complex vocabulary that you're not confident using correctly. The formal pronoun “Vous” , correct use of “Le subjonctif””and “Le conditionel

Support Your Arguments: Back up your opinions and arguments with evidence from the article or other relevant sources. This could include statistics, examples, or quotations.

Consider Counterarguments: Acknowledge any opposing viewpoints or counterarguments to your own position. Address them respectfully and explain why you still hold your opinion.

Proofread Your Response: Take the time to proofread your response for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Ensure that your writing is clear and coherent.

Stay within the Word Limit: Pay attention to any word limit specified for the task and make sure your response fits within it.

Get a Coach: Practice with a coach. A coach will help you organise your writing so it flows with grammatical accuracy using newspaper articles in French before the exam. This will help you become more comfortable with the format and improve your writing skills.
